Can Roofing be Done in the Rain?

Roofing contractors are always aware of the weather conditions. They won't install roofs when it rains because moisture can get trapped and affect the quality of the roof.

Roofing

contractors know that they shouldn't install a roof in wet conditions, and will wait until the site is dry and safe for their roof and roofing equipment. Surprisingly, roofing work can be done when it's raining.

The exception would be a structure with a flat roof, as the risk of water damage is greater in these situations. The roofing installer must be familiar with the special conditions that exist in the residential flat roof installation process. They don't install roofs when it rains because rain can adversely affect the quality of the roof installation, and also creates slippery conditions that make working on the roof dangerous. Most roofing contractors will call their customers to reschedule the roof project if there is a very high chance of rain.

If rain is unlikely, the roofing contractor will likely work on the roof as planned, even if the day is cloudy. To avoid this, ensure that your roofer follows all appropriate safety protocols, including the use of appropriate fall protection as defined by OSHA, and that both he and his crew are covered by general liability insurance. In most roofing jobs, rain will quickly cover any open area with tarps and secure the area. Raindrops, condensation, dew, or even high humidity can cause roofing materials to swell or wrinkle, and cause roofs to bend, curl, or warp.

Therefore, it's best to wait a few days or even until a different season for your roof repair or installation project. If there is lightning in the area, the roofing equipment could be the tallest object in the area. If you're concerned about potential leaks or if your roof hasn't been inspected in years, you can request an inspection as a first step. We suggest temporarily covering the roof with a tarp when it suddenly starts to rain if the platform is not covered with a lower layer.

During a rain, the roof also becomes slippery, which can cause hazardous conditions for the roofer. With rain stopping and starting to fall, roofers can work on smaller parts of roofs at once, just tearing off and replacing each part at a time.
